Maine Orthopedist Selected to Accompany U.S. Men’s Soccer Team at Summer Olympics in China

OA Center for Orthopaedics’ Own Dr. William Heinz To Help Keep Athletes ‘In the Game’ as Men’s Soccer Tries for Olympic Gold in Beijing

Portland, Maine, June 18, 2008 – OA Centers for Orthopaedics, the premier orthopaedic practice in Maine and one of the country’s leading innovators in orthopaedics, today announced that the U.S. Olympic Committee has selected Dr. William Heinz to accompany the U.S.  Men’s Soccer Team as it competes at the upcoming summer Olympics, being held in Beijing China this August. Dr. Heinz will be responsible for the care and treatment of the entire team while in Beijing.

“We are thrilled to hear that Dr. Heinz has been selected to join the Olympic physicians’ entourage this year,” said John Wipfler, CEO of OA Centers for Orthopaedics. “OA has built a tradition of excellence by providing Northern New England patients with expert physicians in every aspect of orthopaedic diagnosis, treatment and surgery. But our reach doesn’t stop there.  Since 1981, OA orthopedists like Bill have had a national and international presence on world class athletic teams.”

The Olympic tradition at OA began when founding physician Doug Brown M.D. first served as a team physician for the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and for U.S. Soccer in 1985.  Brown went on to serve as a team physician for U.S. Soccer for 15 years, including acting as team physician for the Men’s National Team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, the U.S. Woman’s National Team at the 1995 World Cup in Sweden, and the historic Women’s National Team, which won the 1999 World Cup at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.

For his part, Dr. Heinz has been a physician with U.S. Soccer since 1989. Each year, he has accompanied both the men and women’s teams to U.S. tournaments and other world-class events, such as the Pan-Am Games. He will join a team of approximately 60 medical providers including physicians, chiropractors, athletic trainers/physical therapists and massage therapists working with other U.S. athletes at the Games. Dr. Lucien Ouellette, OA’s newest sports medicine physician, recently accompanied Dr. Heinz in Toulon, France as the team prepares for the Olympics.

“I would like to go to Beijing and not be needed at all because everyone on the team stays 100 percent healthy,” said Heinz. “But I know from past experience, the team will be confronted with at least one or two serious injuries during competition. Whether we’re in the O.R. with a weekend warrior in Portland, Maine or on the field in Beijing with a world-class athlete, it’s ultimately the experience of the doctors and the eventual outcome that counts. OA brings that experience to athletes of every size, shape and ability. ”

The Olympic team selection process is in full swing with preliminary tournaments having been recently held in Toulon, France. During the tournament, individual athletes were evaluated and will soon be formally invited to join the U.S. Olympic team. Both Dr. Heinz and Dr. Ouellette provided the teams medical support during this tournament.

At OA, Dr. Heinz specializes in the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of sports-related musculoskeletal injuries. Dr. Heinz holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine and is an adjunct professor at the University of New England. In addition to association with U.S. Soccer, Heinz is also the team physician for the Portland Sea Dogs AA baseball team, the company physician for the Portland Ballet and the orthopaedic consultant for Bridgton Academy, Gould Academy and Deering High School.
